Project Description
Rio Tinto (Mining)
Operational logistics specialist/project manager for consultant team tasked with the planning and implementation of the on-site people and materials logistics systems and processes for the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in the South Gobi Desert. Currently the world’s largest underground mining operation, involving some 8,000 operatives constructing a network of 225km of tunnels 1,500m below the surface. The challenge set was to design a process management system (MOS) and identify technologies and associated equipment to take through feasibility that managed the flow of 2,000 operatives per shift change, three times per day, along with all materials and equipment through one shaft, utilising ‘blue-sky thinking’ and non-mining and military logistics systems, processes and technologies.
